My story starts 5 years ago. I have been in pain my whole life but always thought it was due to my sports … as I LOVE sports. Only once I grew up and started working, did I notice that my pain had not gone away but in fact had worsened day by day. I have always visited GP’s and all of them told me that it was either growing pains or my sport. I was sent home with pain killers. I HATE drinking pills.

I eventually went to see a Neurosurgeon, however a good one is not easily found in South Africa. We did tests and tests and even more tests. After two years of doing tests and rehab, they confirmed it was 100% Fibromyalgia. I was 22 at the time. They told me that this was not good at my age. I have the body of an 80-year-old. I had to get Rhizotomies and infiltrations with cortisone to help ease the pain. This helped for a week and then my pain would spike again. I am still having these treatments, which is killing me inside and depleting my medical aid, but it must be done.

For 3 years I have been the most positive person and refused to accept this illness or even allow it to ruin my life, but now at the age of 26, I am afraid, heartbroken, stressed and even depressed as I can’t stay positive anymore. With all that I have been put through, there has been no progress, no betterment, and my pain is still at its worst.

I am only 26 and I still have my whole life ahead of me. I believe I am strong, and I now also have the correct support system helping me fight this illness. It’s not going anywhere so I will fight until I cannot anymore.

Fibromyalgia is an illness that tends to eat at you before you know it and when it hits you, you are broken down. Awareness is important because so many still believe that it does not exist.

I created my Instagram account in order to keep a diary of my illness. I too, would like to raise awareness.

Fibro Ramblings supports Fibromyalgia Awareness.
