How a Nutritionist/Functional Medicine Practitioner can Treat Fibromyalgia, to possibly cure your Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is globalized pain and sensitivity all over the body in the musculoskeletal system.

Traditional medicine struggles to be able to help people with Fibromyalgia. There is not much medical doctors can do. There is a biologic called Lyrica which treats this at only 10% effectiveness with a huge risk of severe complications. We, in functional medicine, can treat Fibromyalgia without the risk you would get from biologics. We see Fibromyalgia as a mixture of root causes.

This is an inflammatory disease and has many symptoms as well as depression and loss of sleep.  There is concomitant illnesses, meaning other conditions are often seen with Fibromyalgia. 99% of people with Fibromyalgia have Insomnia, 81% have Irritable Bowel Syndrome, 40% have depression, 55% have migraines, and 100% have Sibo (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth). This can be detected by a simple breath test that I could order for you. With Sibo, normal good bacteria in the gut, called your intestinal flora, goes ballistic and grows rapidly. They migrate up from the colon and hang out instead in the small intestine. The debris from these bacteria secretes methane and hydrogen which lowers serotonin. Therefore low serotonin is the first root cause of Fibromyalgia. Why does serotonin get so low? 95% of serotonin is made in the gut so when you have Sibo in the gut, you will also get a drop in serotonin which not only affects your mood and sleep, but your gut motility too.

But what causes Sibo? Many things we eat which we are allergic to and I can test you for, many medications we’re taking, and toxins in our environment cause Sibo.

The bad bacteria in your colon are also out of control and growing rapidly. They secrete chemicals which decrease serotonin and tryptophan and can lead to the secretion of chemicals that increase pain perception and lower quality of sleep.

The second cause of Fibromyalgia is higher glutamate levels. They found people who suffer from Fibromyalgia have higher Glutamate in their body. Glutamate is the largest neurotransmitter in the body. It’s the excitatory neurotransmitter. Opposite of that is GABA, the relaxing neurotransmitter. These need to be in balance. In people with Fibromyalgia, their glutamate is higher. This means they have insomnia or trouble sleeping and may get anxiety more easily. Glutamate or Glutamic Acid can be found in MSG in Chinese food and I’ll give you a tip, there is glutamate or glutamic acid in many protein powders. Check them. If you have Fibromyalgia its best to avoid collagen based protein powders. Get plant based protein powder instead.

The third root cause of Fibromyalgia is impaired ATP production in the mitochondria manifesting in chronic fatigue.  Again, chemicals in Sibo can affect the ATP production.  I can order a simple inexpensive test which will determine ATP production and what nutrients might be missing in that cycle to form ATP and energy. Also cellular detox may be necessary to clean up the cell membranes allowing good nutrients into the cells.

The fourth root cause in Fibromyalgia people is Mercury, lead, or neurotoxin toxicity. Many of my clients with severe symptoms of Fibromyalgia have high levels of mercury or lead toxicity.  This could be from the removal of silver fillings from even 30 years ago. These metals are stored in the tissue mostly the brain and affect every part of the body.  I noticed a vast improvement in symptoms with these clients after I had them go through a heavy metals detoxification program which I put them on and monitored. I find that these clients got their life back. I’d be glad to evaluate that for a client and treat them.

I’ve been successful treating Fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, and chronic autoimmune disease. I have an office in Yardley, Pennsylvania but I also do most client consultations by Zoom, Skype or face time. I offer a 20 min free consultation for you to see if my services can help you. Please visit my website, call me at 215-680-2354, or email me at
